What a Health Coach Eats Every Day



“I bet you only eat broccoli, right?”


As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, I hear statements like this all the time. The truth is, while I do like broccoli, I enjoy all kinds of foods, including bread, pasta and chocolate…..especially chocolate!!

My philosophy is that deprivation absolutely does not work for the long haul.

Cutting out unhealthy carbs or sugar completely is basically impossible to sustain for a lifetime. So let’s get real! What I practice and recommend to my clients is moderation, not deprivation.

It’s not what you eat every once in a while that makes a difference It’s what you’re eating every day that adds up.

Instead of focusing on what foods NOT to eat, I much prefer to make sure my diet DOES include lots of delicious, fresh, health-supporting foods. By making sure you get in the nutrition you need every day, you will naturally crowd out a lot of undesirable foods, simply because you’re not hungry for them.

Here is a list of the foods I strive to eat every day:

1. Greens

Want to be slimmer, smarter, heart healthy and more beautiful? Eat your greens. They are number one on my list for good reason.

Low in calories and packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber (which makes you feel full), studies show that greens increase the skin’s hydration and elasticity, protect against sun damage, protect your brain cells and mitochondria and reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and sudden cardiac failure.

I literally try to include something green in every meal. Smoothies, juices, salads, baked, boiled or sautéed. And the darker the leaf, the higher the nutritional value.

2. A Rainbow of Fruits and Veggies

Vibrant colors equal vibrant health! The gorgeous colors in fruits and veggies indicate the different nutrients they contain. Consuming a rainbow of colors ensures you get enough of all the nutrients you need.

Prepare a beautiful, colorful plate, half of it filled with fruits and veggies and you will boost your immune system; protect against free radicals; lower your risk of cancer, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol; protect your vision; and improve your memory.

3. Berries

Simply put, berries are some of the healthiest foods on the planet. They are antioxidant powerhouses, which neutralize free radical damage in our cells, slowing the aging process and preventing diseases. They are extremely high in some of the highest forms of chronic disease and cancer-fighting compounds.

The American Institute for Cancer Research states, “We now know that blueberries are one of the best sources of antioxidants, substances that can slow the aging process and reduce cell damage that can lead to cancer.”

4. Healthy Fats

Like avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, wild caught fish and nuts. These healthy fats are rich in omega 3s,  which actually lower inflammation in the body and increase fat burning.

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, author of Eat Fat, Get Thin, eating the right fats with every meal actually helps to speed up your metabolism, make your brain work better and faster, balance your hormones and give your skin that beautiful, healthy glow.

Shifting your focus to making sure you include the most healthful foods in your diet every day will put you well on your way to looking and feeling amazing!
